There are some truly outstanding stories here, as well as a few that I didn't like at all. That's often the way of this kind of collection. But Daughters of Icarus totally delivers what it says on the tin -- speculative fiction through a feminist lens -- and I would absolutely recommend it.
As with any collection of short stories, some are better than others. Fun to read, though.
Science fiction with a feminist twist. While the stories were uneven (what anthology isn't)many were will written and even more raised interesting questions that I pondered long after the story was over.
I loved the preface of this book in which the editor defined her take on feminism - it's one of the best definitions I've ever read. I hope the preface is published somewhere separately as a short essay or blog post so everyone has an opportunity to read it.As is usual with Pink Narcissus Press anthologies, the stories in this book are strange, unusual, challenging, and thought provoking. Short story collections, to me, are like chocolates - you enjoy one or two at a time rather than gobbling up the whole box at once. And these are tasty.Whatever you think of when you read the phrase "feminist science-fiction short stories" probably doesn't capture the imaginative and throught-provoking tales included in this collection.
