Ausgewählte Schriften zur Diktatur der Kunst (edition suhrkamp, #2656)

Ausgewählte Schriften zur Diktatur der Kunst (edition suhrkamp, #2656)

Jonathan Meese
4/5 ( ratings)
This is a collection of the texts and speeches by Jonathan Meese about his concept of dictatorship of art, starting with the opening text of the exhibition at the Hamburger Deichtorhallen*. More speeches follow for about one third of the book, which according to his terror of variation method permutate the topic and set it into context with his general work. The rest of the book are excerpts of his numerous writings, small storybooks for plays, poetry and other aphoristical texts.
There is a register at the end of the book which offers background information about the ideas and persons that fill his overwhelming cosmos of art. It informs about the origin and sources from where he took them, like movies and audiobooks, reaching as far back as his childhood.
For the interested follower of his artistic oeuvre, the book gives a genuine, in-depth insight into his political program and it is the first attempt of summarizing material which is spread across all of his output. It is not an easy read, since it can be hard to follow a transcript of one of his exhaustive speeches. Still, it is a valuable source and his positions are most explicitly put down here, at least as explicit as an actor can be. Beware that there are no explicitly "didactic" texts which introduce you to the concepts. Every text already existed and they were not created as a scientific or academic introduction. Readers should already be acquainted with Meese's works, especially with his verbal performances.

The book itself is a paperback with a dust jacket that matches the material of the sport jacket which the authors loves to wear as part of his "uniform".

*This is unfortunately not stated explicitly in the book, why they ommitted that information is incomprehensible to me. You have to take my word for it or try to find a video on the internet and compare it.
