Interviewer:You’ve written a number of pieces from the point of view of aging men—two sections in “Great House” are narrated by older men as well. What draws you to that kind of voice?Krauss:Clark Kent has Superman, Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce, and I have old Jewish men.
I have no idea what this is even about
Krauss writes beautiful sentences. This is a great story if life and loss and finding place in between the two.
Such a well written short story.
I felt this could have turned into a pretty good novel. Lots of life/death conflict going on. Just too short to have a good read on the meaning.
It's brilliantly conceived, exquisitely written. I'd just read the story of Rabbi Zusya, who imagined going up to heaven and hearing God say - not "Why weren't you ore like Moses," but "Why weren't you Zusya?" It's a story that teaches that we must try to be the best we can be. In this story, a character named Zusya, a holocaust survivor, tries to come to terms with the new world in America. Not an extraneous word in the story. Deeply moving.
