I received a copy of this to review from NetGalley, but there were a few issues with it right from the get go. It's not the 10th Doctor as the description states (as of this review date), it's 11! And there were only two stories instead of sixteen. The number of stories could simply be because it's a preview, but the 10 and 11 Doctor mix-up is kind of a big deal! And this graphic novel seems to be listed everywhere with the incorrect description. Yikes.Overall, the two stories included were nice...
At Winter's Dawn begins a story with the 11th Doctor and his companions Amy and Rory. It's the wedding anniversary of Amy and Rory and they want to get away somewhere romantic. The Doctor has other ideas and whisks them away to Victorian England on the eve of the Great Exposition. They find things amiss in the crystal palace when they discover something that shouldn't be there. It ties in with a couple who think they have been communicating with the spirit world, but instead have been speaking w...
This is yet another installment in the much loved Dr. Who series. Now as someone who is very new to this wonderful cast of characters I was very interested in experiencing a true Dr. Who story. And I will say that I was not disappointed. The characters were wonderful to follow around, the story very interesting, and all of the art was very well done. I really enjoyed the way that each page was composed; never really repeating the monotony of normal comic panels, but were broken up with character...
3.5 stars. Two-second recap: The synopsis of this comic potentially offers a lot of awesome things. However, due to a condensed preview and incorrect synopsis, I can't give a full assessment of that potential. But I'll do the best with what I've been given! ***Because the galley only gives a condensed version of the comic, I'm going to individually review the two comics included, and then review the product as a whole. Also, despite what the synopsis says: the comic does not contain stories with...
Unlike the majority of the other reviews on Goodreads for this book, I did not receive this as a NetGalley preview, so I did read 400 pages of adventure following the Tenth Doctor and the mysterious adversary the Advocate. As with my recent experience with a tie-in novel, I don’t ordinarily go for tie-in graphic novels. This was, again, a Christmas present.I enjoyed Winter’s Dawn, Season’s End more than Engines of War . Maybe it’s the fact that, with pictures, we get to see more of the physic...
As others have noted the description above appears to be incorrect.Since I was working from a partial review copy, I didn't have the full volume to read, just the first 4 issues (2 stories). Specifically _The Hypothetical Gentleman_ by Andy Diggle and Mark Buckingham and _The Doctor and the Nurse_ by Brandon Seifer and Philip Bond. This should be fairly representative of the material available in the full volume though. It is a collection of issues from the monthly comic featuring the (then) curr...
The blurb for this book says that it’s about “the last comic adventures of the 10th Doctor“. So I was very surprised when I started reading it and realized that it’s actually about the 11th and the Ponds. I love those characters, so it’s okay… but how did that a mistake like that happen? The Hypothetical GentlemanThe art is really good, except Rory looked a bit weird a couple of times. But the art is still superior to other Doctor Who comics I’ve seen. It’s Rory and Amy’s anniversary, but Amy is
I was so looking forward to reading this - a Doctor Who collection, beautifully bound, with my favourite Doctor? Yes please. But what a boring, drawn-out story! Rather than being a collection of shorter stories, the first 364 pages of the book are taken up with the same story, which was less-than-exciting. I am fairly new to Doctor Who, so maybe I'm missing some background information, but it took me forever to get through this, as I kept getting bored with the story. In my opinion, the comics f...
“I reeeeally wouldn’t touch it if I were you. You see, your Nazi mythology got it wrong-along with everything else.”The Doctor in Doctor Who Series 1: Winter’s Dawn, Season’s End by Tony LeeEvery once in a while I love to read comic books, as they are usually a nice break from 500+ page books. Recently I was in the mood for some comics and was browsing Netgalley. I saw a Doctor Who comic, and I didn’t even stop to read a description before I requested it. It wasn’t until I opened the book that I...
Doctor Who Fans Will Cherish ”Doctor Who Series 1: Winter's Dawn, Season's End”Ok, honestly, I’ve never been a graphic novel person but I’m a huge Doctor Who fan and when the chance to review a Doctor Who book came along…well, of course I jumped at the chance! I was frankly delighted with both the stories and the illustrations. An incredibly talented artistic team make the familiar faces of Doctor Who, Amy and Rory seem to leap from the page and the stories are a delight! This is a must-have for...
ARC Provided by NetGalleyAs of July 6th, 2013 Doctor Who Series 1: Winter’s Dawn, Season’s End incorrectly identifies this particular volume of Doctor Who comics as featuring the 10th Doctor (played by David Tennant). The pre-release review copy by NetGalley actually includes stories (2, not the 16 advertised) featuring the 11th Doctor (played by Matt Smith). The annual mentioned in the item description is not included. It is currently unclear if IDW Publishing has simply provided vendors with i...
THIS IS THE REVIEW FOR NETGALLEY ARC AND NOT OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT...... Original Link to the review at my blog Le' Grande Codex - here My weirdest review ever. Presenting Doctor Who Series 1: Winter's Dawn, Season's End by Tony Lee, Jonathan L. Davis, Matthew Dow Smith, Al Davison, Blair Shedd, Kelly Yates. Here is the summary of the book:Writer Tony Lee is joined by artists such as Matthew Dow Smith, Al Davison, Blair Shedd, and Kelly Yates to bring you the last comic adventures of the
”There’s no point being grown-up if you can’t be childish sometimes.”I don’t have a lot to say about this book, but not because it wasn’t fantastic. You either like Dr. Who, or you don’t. If you’re a fan, read this book! It’s super fun and delightful! The whole book is comprised of three plots which work together to create one main story. All of the comics are written and illustrated by different people, and the second story (in my opinion) has the more detailed and captivating drawings. My only...
Disclaimer: I received this book in exchange for a fair review. All thoughts are my own.Type: Graphic Novel, Series, Science Fiction, Time Travel, The Doctor Is In!!About the Book: A graphic novel with stories featuring the 11th Doctor - from Silence to a Beer Flood, and more! Follow the Doctor and the Ponds on their many adventures. My Review: Well, this will be an interesting and short review, since I only got a preview of the novel to review - as in, just the first two "episodes." While I did
Some stories were good, some predictable but they are fun and a delight to read!
ARC received from Netgalley. As many others have pointed out, the description of this is wholly inaccurate. The twos stories in the preview feature the Eleventh Doctor and the Ponds, not Ten and whatever companion they chose to put in there. The stories are set soon after Amy is rescued by the Doctor and Rory from Madame Kovarian and has lost Melody (River) as a baby. That being said, the two stories--"The Doctor and the Hypothetical Gentleman" and "The Doctor and the Nurse"--were enjoyable. The f...
This is going to be one of the weirdest reviews I have ever written. Because it'll be about a book that doesn't exist. :)I requested the ARC for Doctor Who Series 1: Winter's Dawn, Season's End . What I got is a issue of The Doctor 11 with two stories. I'm not sure about the title of the first, as the first 4 pages are missing (cover and title probably). The second story, by a completely different illustrator, is "The Doctor and the Nurse".So, my opinion of this different comic book :D. I had a
Review Given Through NetGalley:I only got to see about half of this book, through NetGalley. Each story had its own illustrator, so it was neat to get to see the Doctor, Rory, and Amy in different styles. However, when one style had accurate portrayals of the characters, the emotions and facial expressions were lacking. Another had great art that popped, but the trio looked little like they were supposed to. The writing had the right feel for the characters - their phrases and accents count prac...
Doctor Who Volume One: Winter’s Dawn, Season’s End is the best Doctor Who comic I have read, by far. The tenth Doctor, post Donna, is traveling about in 1920’s Hollywood, when he finds himself some aliens (as usual) as well as some new companions (as usual). His new companions are an aspiring actress who has lost her steam and a runner for the studio. Between the two of them, they convince the Doctor to take them for a ride or two. Unlike some of the other comics, the plot develops, in part beca...
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.I am not a big Doctor Who fan but I wanted to read this and give it a try. I don't really enjoy Graphic Novels either. So this was my first real Graphic Novel and my first Doctor Who experience. I actually enjoyed it. I did struggle at some parts because I got confused with the pictures and stuff but that's because I'm new at all of this.I loved the pictures and the characters and the plot line. It was definitely entertaining and very intriguing I can def...
