Is this meant for kids maybe? The bad guys are flat stereotypical evil overlords, the good guy is a genie owned by a kid and his family. Ancient powers are real and they will battle the evil overlords Digimon style...couldn't get into it.
ARC provided by NetGalleyEntertaining magic-versus-space-aliens graphic novel. The reasoning behind the alien invasion isn't initially clear, but the Exile's subplot both makes up for that lack and will, presumably, eventually explain why the aliens are now attacking Earth (I think we need to just take the Jinns defense on faith). The art has much more of a "comic book" feel than a "graphic novel" feel while the plot and storytelling feel more like a fun, 'epic' summer blockbuster (a la The Aven...

Disappointing. Aliens invade the Earth and our only hope for defense is an ancient race we call genies. Fantasy and Science Fiction are uncomfortable bedfellows when not done right, and this is an example of that.I found the art to be too cartoony, fighting against the story. Also, whoever did the text made a grievous error. The font used for the aliens was difficult to parse while the jinn often had black text against dark blue background.it’s almost as if they were trying to hide the writing.
Actually 4.5 out of five stars. Click (or copy) the link to read my full review: http://itinerantlibrarian.blogspot.co...
Great art, interesting storyAdmittedly, I don’t read many graphic novel so I feel a bit illiterate in the vocabulary and structure. The art of Jinnrise is great, and looks similar to the rest of the graphic novel aisle at the book store. The story is interesting, and I love the infusion and inclusion of Jinn from a middle eastern, rather than a co-opted western one. Bottom line: Aliens vs. Jinn= pretty cool time. I read this as part of our reading around the world and wanted to read something ve...
Bought this for my son and also read it myself. It was a lot of fun! Enough superhero stories out there, so it was nice to read a fresh take on heroism. A nice blend of fantasy and science fiction to boot.Dynamic artwork too. Somewhat jarring when they switched artists, but both brought something exciting to the story.
When aliens from space come, destroying buildings, US student Andrew is visiting Egypt amazed at how different it is. He is cornered by alien laser beams but a champion out of myth fights off the attack just in time. The art features bright colour images with fine shading.Different typefaces represent the difference in speech (perhaps in language and articulation) between the alien Isibranni and humans. The Netgalley review copy included the first three issues contained in the volume.
More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/ Jinnrise is a novel clearly targeted at very young boys - and as such it's not something that should be read too deeply. We have aliens attacking a planet, lessons about respecting other races and saving the planet by not plundering its resources, and the best Earth defenders ever - genies/djinn.Andrew is a Caucasian doing school study in Marrakesh. While there, the Earth is attacked by aliens oddly resembling anthrop
Εντυπωσιακές εικόνες, σχετικά αδύναμο σενάριο, μηδέν υπόβαθρο των -μη υπερφυσικών ή εξωγήινων- ηρώων. Οι κακοί του είναι απολαυστικοί.
An American student somewhere in the Middle East is caught up in an alien attack by the "Kibrani." The only way to stop the attack seems to be the Jinn. A young boy the student runs into has a Jinn at his disposal, and he finds himself learning more about the world around him as his eyes are opened. It's an okay book. The art is good, but I think it's geared toward a younger audience. I sometimes had a hard time reading the text from the Kibrani because the lettering was a bit too calligraphic in...
