More fun than a bag of severed appendages. Some of these stories were extreme, as in Sexy, by Wrath James White, some were extreme in terms of their psychological horror such as Jack Kethchum's If Memory Serves. Finally, some where extreme in terms of grossness, as in Monica O'Rourke's Road Kill. Others were less extreme from rather tame, Home by JF Gonzalez (I know I know) to midrange nervouse breakdown, like in Fat Boy. Great writing throughout, some really nice and nasty bits, some misses, so...
It’s October and it’s time to get scared! I’ve read horror for decades so I just didn’t just want some run-of-the-mill story. No, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and test my boundaries.D.O.A. II is an anthology of Extreme Horror. For me Extreme Horror brings up images of brutal torture, blood and guts, explicit pain and suffering among other such immoral acts of human behavior. While some of these stories would fit into this category, others necessarily did not. Yes they were Horror but n...
This was ridiculous. Each story was enthralling and disturbing at the same time. Its hard to have a favorite when they're all so varied, but I've gotta say I liked JF Gonzalez's, Ketchum, and Mckenzie's most, there just weren't any weak entries so its hard to specify something like that.
This was more like it, as anthologies go. Overall a lot more variety compared to Woom and some true stand-out pieces. The gross-out horror that is there is much better realized and conveys a sense of true revulsion and terror as compared to some of the "Preteens telling exaggerated stories" feel that some of the chapters of Woom had about them. Especially "Stud Service." Jesus Fucking Christ, what a vile ride that was."Home" had a twist followed shortly by another twist just before the ending an...
Couldn't finish this. There's extreme horror, and then there's sleaze and cheap gross-outs. The majority of what I read was the latter. I'm giving this two stars because there were some quality, and actually subversive, stories here.
You want extreme horror stories? Well this is the book for you! Disgusting, revolting and just downright wrong. These short stories will guarantee to test your gag reflex. Maybe there's something wrong with me but I thoroughly enjoyed this.
This is a no-frills anthology that goes straight to the action. Twenty-eight stories with only a few flops among them. It's a much stronger offering than the first book. It's more creative, has better twists, and the tales themselves are generally of a higher quality, plot- and literary-wise. A lot of the really good ones are bunched in the first half tho.The most note-worthy stories here are:The Devouring - a rip-roaring start to the collection featuring the kind of feverish passion that deface...
UPDATE: I just realized how much this review sucks. It reads like a fucking marketing tool, written by a Marketing TOOL! If you're into this kinda stuff, and I mean INTO this kinda stuff, you will love this. You know who Ed Lee is, and you know what he does. These writers are fucking out there, man. OUT THERE! The kind of place NO ONE wants to be. When these guys wake up in the morning, I think even Satan hides under his covers and says: "Oh Fuck, they're up." Or perhaps, they never sleep? The w...
**Warning- Only for the seriously depraved and disturbed of heart.** Nightmares are rarely this disturbing. I wasn't sure if the second book would live up to the first one but bless their twisted little hearts (all contributing authors), there is no skimping on the nasty in book two. :) (I marathon read these two anthologies in a two day period, one clicking the second book as fast as the page would load.) I've been thinking about putting a warning in the first review since I started book two,
Some of these stories are really, really bad. It seemed maybe they were making fun of themselves and of tropes but they were still just... terrible, and I couldn’t even enjoy them from a satire POV. Others I really enjoyed! Mostly I sat here in abject horror with my face scrunched up. I’m generally someone who is very desensitized, but a few of these stories hit on my weak spots and really, deeply grossed me out and I barely battled through them. That’s what I had hoped for. Personally I’ve come...
Review being subbed to Scream Magazine
The quality really varies in this collection. Most of the stories in it weren't written by Wrath James White. Some were amazing, and some were just plain boring to me.
Mixed thoughts. I liked some, some were gross but awesome, others were a bit dull. Some I skipped... Its hard for me to get into collection books. Especially with multiple authors.
Uuurgh. Utterly disgusting. But deliciously so. Its not horror per se, which only churns you in one register (as in, I’m scared), but a quagmire of puss filled, festering open sores on curdled flesh and chunky torrents of snot boogers which slide rancidly down puke crusted throats like escargot on the prowl, orgies of writhing in red tinged ejaculate on the floor and lapping up piss thirstily, obese women whose gelatinous flesh folds over glistening rolls as they strain to eke out a dump, dicks
This was a good collection of extreme horror short stories. I never wanted to put the book down. It made me nauseous several times, which is always a good sign to me! :-)
I read this book about 20 minutes in and vomited in my mouth and I couldn't continue. I tried the other chapters but I could not get past a few pages each time... I cannot stomach any of the stories until completion, in fact, I feel a little bile rising up my throat typing up this review... *pukes* Sorry I'm not much help of a proper review but I would highly recommend braving your soul for this.
Good horror book. Don’t read if you don’t like gore because there are some stories that are a bit disgusting 🤢
Great bookA bunch of excellent short stories to read in your spare time. Each one was a page turner to the end.
3 Stars - The Devouring - Damn. How do you rate something you're not into? The writing was solid. The couple, from my point of view, are twisted-sick, and are into some stomach-clenching, asphyxiation shit. If you dig that snuff stuff this may be for you.5 Stars- If Memory Serves by Jack Ketchum- Multiple personalities. Some secretss should stay just that.5 Stars- Scream and I'll Come To You by Raymond Little- Maybe they should have used another symptom instead of screaming. Too easy to misunder...
The eternal question for any movie or book is the sequel. The first one caught your attention and you waver a bit on the next release. Should you or should you not? The first D.O.A. was good promising itself to be an Extreme Horror Collection. Some of the stories seemed a might thinnish with some good, gory, disturbing content. Taking on the grotesque and riding with it. Very happy to say here D.O.A. II carries on the grand tradition with excellent story qualities. You still get the extreme horr...
