If you love baseball and you appreciate reading essays, this is a perfectly pleasant way to pass some time reading. But, fair warning, you have to really love baseball.
I enjoyed reading this group of essays about sports and what they mean to different people. The love of a game, a game that can make ones summer, leaving them bereft at the end of a season. Like many sport books they also include many takes of human interest, other world events, other things in life. The essays are written by a variety of people; coaches, players, sportswriters, and some by people who just love the game. They relate what they love about the game, or a special memory of the game....
I love baseball (go Cubbies and my new hometown team, The Twins!), so I relished this assortment of essays on the game, most written by sports writers, some by former players. Some brought back memories of me riding from farm to farm with my veterinarian father, listening to the Cubs or Cardinals on the radio. An interesting book. Some great stories and some okay stories.
To any baseball fan, these stories are as a caressing salve on an inflamed wound. I reacted so predictably to the storytellers professional grace. I smiled, I laughed, I put myself into the story, closed my eyes and let the storyteller wash my soul with baseball. Ah, baseball. As an old Baby Boomer, I still have the patience and attention span to truly enjoy baseball. I haven't always been able to follow it as I did as a kid, when knowing all about baseball was my major hobby.
