INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE AND IMPUNITY: The Case of the United States

INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE AND IMPUNITY: The Case of the United States

Diana G. Collier
5/5 ( ratings)
First published by L’Harmattan, this book compiles the presentations delivered at a conference on International Justice and Impunity: The Case of the United States, held at the Palais Bourbon in Paris, chaired by UN Special Rapporteur Theo Van Boven, and renowned French scholar, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, organized by the Association for the Defense of International Humanitarian Law with support from and participation of a wide range of international-legal organizations and notables.

It reflects the efforts of North American and European scholars, advocates and international organizations operating at the highest level in the areas of international humanitarian law to advance the cause of international justice, and address the negative global impact of impunity exercised by powerful states.

It is a damning indictment of the Hiroshimas of our time, and a cogent elaboration of the values to be defended and the actions to be taken, for humanity to triumph over the new wave of international barbarism brought about by US efforts to consolidate and extend the dimensions of the American empire.

Once the champion of the United Nations, the US now disregards the Geneva Conventions; uses international humanitarian law as a pretext for intervention, actively opposes the International Criminal Court; creates no-law zones such as Guantanamo; and forces states to sign bilateral agreements granting immunity to US citizens.

The US pursuit of a unilateral imperial policy based on military force destroys the credibility of the nascent international legal framework. Rather, it is leading the world by example toward a human future without rules or values, where earth’s peoples are subject to the whims of the more powerful.

Prominent presenters include former Attorney-General Ramsey Clark, Tadatoshi Akiba, the present mayor of Hiroshima, Samir Amin, William Blum, Michael Parenti, Les Roberts, Amy Bartholomew, Robert Charvin, William Bourdon, Jean Bricmont, and Genevieve Sevrin and other professors of political science and international law or directors of international advocacy organizations.
