I don't know why this book bored me the first time around. I was really impressed this time.Gestation, Final Meal and Not All There are the best stories in the book. My favourite stories were (in order of their place in the book):The UnseenFamine's ShadowWhen the Rain ComesWhy So SadDoc JohnsonThe One that Got AwaySet Me FreeRoad to CarsonSpecial mention: Gestation. Murderous butterfly hybrid lesbians. What a strong note to end the book on.
Collection of short horror stories, some supernatural some more psychological, from various authors. It's clearly visible, that to make good story in few pages, is not an easy task. While some pieces are pretty good and able to build tension, other would need some work, and maybe also few more pages to grow to full potential. So book serves as good preview of interesting ideas, and many talented artist, some pretty know, some not so much, but only few stories were memorable enough to stuck with
Anthologies are like going to a party where you don't know anyone. If you're incredibly lucky, you like almost everyone. If you're incredibly unlucky, no one strikes your interest. I'd put In the Dark somewhere middling. There were some very strong, interesting stories. There were a handful of stories that I felt were more pitches than standalones, and then there were some that felt like three dudes at a bar were making bets on which one could out-bro the others. It's a library pick, I'd say. No...
Vampires, werewolves, and zombies, oh, my!In The Dark is an assortment of short horror stories told in graphic novel form (the art is mostly awesome and pretty gruesome). Lots of these tales of terror end with a twist, which works well as they are very succinct and are not allotted the time or space to truly flesh their characters out. Anthologies are usually a mixed bag of hits and misses. My favorites of this bunch: The Road To Carson, The Cage, and The Lost Valley Of The Dead.As a reader of S...
All graphic novels should be this size. At least all graphic novels with gorgeous art like this one has should be this size. It might be a little unwieldy to handle, but it's worth it. The stories were very short, a lot of times I thought they were too short, but most of them were pretty good. But it was the art that really made this special. The pictures aren't always pretty, but the artists who contributed to this collection are clearly some of the best in horror. There's an interesting piece
I really enjoyed this anthology and think it's a great collection of spooky comics! There were a few that I wasn't a fan of but most of these stories were really good. The artwork throughout the anthology was also amazing, I don't think there was a single comic in here that had subpar illustrations. I do think collections like these are a great way to get to know comic writers and artists. In fact, I noticed there's a comic in this book by Tynion and Donovan, whose work also includes Eugenic, wh...
I always tell myself to never buy an anthology because I can't remember when was the last time I really liked one, but I always fall into the trap of "Hey, it might have a few good stories in it? Right?!" "It HAS to have a few at least that's good and that'll be mysterious enough and creepy and whatnot right?"WRONG.1 star because of the nice artwork in some stories and because of some decent ones in there. Other than that, it was boring made me fall asleep, made wanna lose interest in life. A hu...
What a fun read. In the Dark reminded me of the old EC horror comics with a dash of Twilight Zone/Outer Limits thrown in. If you dig Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt this is a must read.
I bought this thinking it was another recent horror comic collection, but kept it because it looked interesting. There are many hooks in these stories, but I think it would be more memorable if less people had been included and the volume developed longer, stronger stories. it's hard to be horrifying in 3-7 pages, especially in the graphic format. so a lot of the time the stories would consist of a cool conceit with nothing to tether it to the reader. maybe the writers/artists will develop more
Horror is a slightly exaggerated description of this collection of tame stories. All of the industry standards are represented here: vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts... Sometimes they’re the villain, sometimes they’re the hero, but not once do they ever contribute to a story that I found even slightly unsettling. The current political climate is more conducive to a sleepless night than anything in this tome. On the plus side, I bought this book purely for Marguerite Bennett’s offering, and
Big beautiful book full of quick shockers. And the history of horror comics piece at the end is almost worth the price of admission alone.
As a backer of this anthology collection on Kickstarter, I may well be biased, but this is a generally excellent collection of 24 short horror stories told by a mixture of familiar and new names in the horror comics field, separated by dated adverts that evoke feelings of yesteryear when comics like Tales from the Crypt and The Haunt of Fear graced shelves. In a tome this large - that features opening and closing essays talking about horror and its development through comics over the decades - t...
In the Dark: A Horror Anthology is a impressive collection of various short fiction illustrated by some of the most talented artists the comic book industry has to offer. I felt these illustrators really captured the essence of the majority of these pieces. My personal favorite was The Lost Valley Of The Dead written by Brian Keene and art provided by Tadd Galusha. The original short was included as a add on in An Occurrence in Crazy Bear Valley, however it did appear in a lot of other collectio...
The first thing I noticed upon receiving this (note: I was a Kickstarter backer and got the hardcover due to my pledge level, which was basically the cost of the hardcover. I had the PDF for a bit, but had not read it) was the size and heft of it. Even for your average 336 page graphic novel, this is weighty. Much closer to solid shape of the various "Ultimate" style sets. Flipping through, it contains dozens of short (a few pages, I would guess 6-8 pages on average, but that's a guess) horror c...
Wow. This is a quality anthology. I'm putting this in my top ten of the year I think.
Not nearly disturbing enough to my liking. There were some hidden gems among mostly forgettable entries. Final Meal, In Plain Sight, Why So Sad and Not All There were not bad. The Lost Valley of The Dead featured cowboys and zombies. I thought it was cool right until the dinosaurs showed up. Swan Song had the most gorgeous artwork. But I had no idea at all what the story was about. Like I said, a mixed bag.
This was a great horror graphic novel anthology. All of the great tropes are here: ghosts, vampires, werewolves, psychos, etc. but with a new twist in most cases. The art is great too. The stories were overall of better quality than most collections of this nature. There is also a great article on horror comics as well. I highly recommend this to horror comic fans.
This is an anthology of short horror comics. Some were excellent, some were meh. The problem was that most of the stories are 5 to 8 pages, so there's not a lot of room to flesh them out. Maybe if there were fewer stories with more room to develop them, more of them would have had a greater impact. A lot of them had really great concepts and it was s quick read.
EDIT : 69th book read this month. NICE. Also crossed 10,000 pages for this month. Feeling proud ;-;I really think this is a great book for Horror fans. 24 stories all different and varying very differently in genre and story. The art was gorgeous. There's that glorious pin-up gallery which has amazing jaw-dropping art. A epilogue covering the history of horror comics. Yeah. I would even say a must-read.Of course all the stories don't hit. That's fine. Where there's variety, there's a high chance
Now that summer is upon us and the heat is coming in waves, I'm in the mood for something to give me some chills. This appealed to me because I like my horror short. I want spooky but I don't want to get too attached to my doomed characters. I've currently been listening to the No Sleep Podcast and, much like the tales in this anthology, some are hits and some are misses.Overall, I liked the different aspects of horror contained within, from zombies to ghosties to...lost world-esque...zombie din...
