Francis John Miller was born in London in 1863. He was brought up in a relatively strict Christian household with his parents, brother and sister. Having trained as a cabinet maker, Francis decided to follow his older brother to Australia and Tasmania where he started a business before deciding on going to Africa to become a missionary. Africa in the 1890s was certainly not a tourist destination and life was a daily hardship. Francis' sense of humour never let him down.
Francis' original handwritten notes have been transcribed and his story follows his experiences in the world of the late 1800s and early 1900s. From his life in Victorian England to Australia and Tasmania and finally to Africa, Francis' positive attitude is an inspiration.
