Bettina Riddle, also known as the Baroness Von Hutten was an early 20th century novelist. The Halo's prologue beings on a quiet country road lined with ancient apple trees. An old blind man and his dog are leaning against a tree. The man has a violin and he is making such horrible sounds that a young boy begins to cry with the pain of it. They talk and the man then plays a beautiful song for the boy and tells him that some day he will play the violin. The story begins with Victor who is the leading violinist in Europe. Lady Brigit decides to fall in love with his son purely out of boredom. She then turns her attention to the father and just as they are about to elope Victor's wife dies.
