This catalogue is the first in-depth survey of the dance halls that populate Central Texas. Documenting 72 dance halls within a 150-mile radius of Austin, the collection of photographs and drawings presented here is principally an appreciation of the structures. The work focuses on the singular presence and rich space that defines each of the individual halls. Taken together, they record and bear witness to a significant aspect of American culture, still present, albeit steadily vanishing. While the significance of these pre-World War II buildings may be less evident than it once was, they remain compelling, like touchstones to a not-so-distance memory.
