It’s a place to stay for women in need. Don’t call it a Boarding House!

Big Bertha, now Mrs. Alsobrook, has settled happily into married life with Henry, but she’s too much of a caretaker to ignore the needs of the townspeople around her. She’s proud of her new role, until a new woman comes to town who wants Bertha’s job. Mrs. Viola Davies thinks that she, as the preacher’s wife, should be the town’s saving grace. She also thinks that Bertha, as a former soiled dove and madam, has no place in the growing town.

Their opposition comes to a head when two young women–sisters–are abandoned with no family, no resources, and no plans. Mrs. Davies wants to marry the sisters off as quickly as possible and she’s not too concerned with the quality of the potential husbands. Bertha wants to give them choices. She remembers when she was abandoned, and the dark path it put her on, and she wants to do for these young women what no one did for her. But even offering them a place to stay is fraught with peril, because in the Wild West a “boarding house” has a reputation.

Things turn ugly as Mrs. Davies reminds everyone of Bertha’s past. Bertha might be willing to accept a bad reputation–she’s had one before, after all–but then it impacts Henry’s ranching business. Bertha is faced with a she can protect the life with Henry she fought so long and hard to get, or she can protect two young women whose vulnerable position remind Bertha of the turning point in her own life.

This story is the prequel to The No-Name Boarding House Series.
