The Essential of Machiavelli: The Prince, Discourses on Titus Livius, Art of War, Florentine Histories, and others

The Essential of Machiavelli: The Prince, Discourses on Titus Livius, Art of War, Florentine Histories, and others

Ninian Hill Thomson

One of the main thinkers of the Renaissance era – if not the main one – Machiavelli was disruptive for his time. He broke with a highly positivist and normative tradition to establish a descriptive analysis of reality as it is. The shock he caused with his writings by describing politics as it really is was so great that his name became synonymous with something Machiavellian.

But whether Machiavelli himself was Machiavellian is highly debatable. What is certain is that his raw analysis of reality has impacted and keeps impacting generation after generation.

This book brings together three of Machiavelli's main

1) The Prince is frequently regarded as one of the earliest writings of modern philosophy, particularly modern political philosophy, in which the effectual truth is valued above any abstract ideal. It is also remarkable for being in direct opposition to the mainstream Catholic and scholastic ideas of the time, especially in matters of politics and ethics. This edition brings the classical 1908 translation by W. K. Marriott, a British translator known for translating various works from the Renaissance era.

2) The Discourses on Titus Livius is regarded as Niccolo Machiavelli's work on republics, presented as a commentary on Titus Livius' first ten books of History of Rome , which relate the expansion of Rome through the end of the Third Samnite War in 293 BC. This edition brings the classical and popular translation of the British Ninian Hill Thomson .

3) The Art of War , written in a Socratic dialogue format, is intended "to honor and reward virtù, not to have contempt for poverty, to esteem the modes and orders of military discipline, to constrain citizens to love one another, to live without factions, to esteem less the private than the public good". In this book, the reader will find one of the greatest treatises on military and political theory in history. The translation presented in this edition is a modernized version of the classic English translation of Henry Neville made public by the Online Library of Liberty.

4) The Florentine Histories , the translation presented in this edition is the 1872 anonymous translation published by Bell & Daldy in the 19th century.

The reader will also find two other Machiavelli works and selected comments about Machiavelli.
