Bud James is a simple, unadorned old man. To make ends meet he picks peppers in the chile fields, or shoes horses when there are horses to be shod. Professions which, as he puts it, require him to spend most of the day with his head lower than his ass. Never married and with little education, this common man commits one uncharacteristic, violent act which converts everything about his life and his person.
In full flight from the law he befriends a homeless urchin, a kid with much of the savvy and clever survival instincts that Bud lacks. Together they set out on a marvelous trek toward California, encountering thieves, rustlers, whores, a tattooed dwarf and a crazy woman who hunts wolves with a knife.
