This volume contains all the extant works of the early church fathers Justin Martyr and Athenagoras. Both lived during the 2nd century AD, and were among the first Christian apologists. Their writings allow keen insights into the lives of early Christians, particularly the “Apologies” of Justin and Athenagoras' “Plea.”
It is interesting to note that even in the days of Justin Martyr, who died in the 160's AD, there was already division of opinion among Christians on various topics, as he alludes to in the “Dialogue with Trypho.” Justin is also very allegorical in his interpretations of Scripture, more ready to find pictures of Christ in minute details of the Old Testament than perhaps many would be comfortable tracing today. Both Justin and Athenagoras can be understood as legalistic in their writings as well.
This translation is somewhat dated, not always reading smoothly, and contains copious footnotes. Most of the footnotes are Scripture references or alternate readings in Greek. While a working knowledge of Greek and Latin are not necessary to read these works, the footnotes often contain untranslated material. With the exception of these footnotes, most all of these works are readily accessible to the layman.
