The tour begins at Drewry’s Bluff on the James River just south of Richmond. Confederate defenders, holding a commanding position there, turned back a Union naval offensive against the Confederate capitol in May 1862. The tour continues south along US Route 1, the old Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike, exploring the remains of Bermuda Hundred fortifications and historic buildings.
The tour concludes just north of the Appomattox River at Violet Bank, one most unusual historic homes in Virginia and Robert E. Lee’s early headquarters during the siege of Petersburg.
