Carmi 55

Carmi 55

Richard Reynolds
4/5 ( ratings)
In August of 1990, Dave Wilson was in the critical stage of a project whose outcome could make or break his young Oklahoma City engineering company. Even with the importance of the project, he allowed himself a weekend off to attend his high school class reunion 600 miles away in the small Southern Illinois town of Carmi. He had not been back to Carmi since he graduated in 1955 and he was determined not to miss another reunion. Within an hour of arriving in Carmi, Dave met Jackie LeRoy, his old high school nemesis, at a local restaurant. LeRoy accused Dave of coming back to Carmi to interfere with his planned marriage to Jane, the same girl they competed for in high school, and a scuffle broke out. Eight hours later LeRoy is murdered and all the witnessess to the restaurant skirmish pointed the police to Dave and said the fight was over Jane. Dave became the police's only suspect with the scuffle being the motive. With no evidence for an arrest, they instead limited his freedom to within the city limits. Arguments about the need to return to Oklahoma for his project completion fell on deft ears. While the police worked their investigation, they were under constant pressure from the town leaders for a quick arrest and they could be satisfied with the arrest of one Dave Wilson. Aware of this building sentiment, Dave began a journey to learn why the police were so focused on him as the killer and not looking for anyone else. Playing amateur detective constantly kept him in trouble with the police but they tolerated his brashness because he was able to use his analytical skills to uncover clues they could not find. The people he met and the places he traveled seeking answers triggered memories of his youth, uncovered many closely guarded secrets, and fueled an unexpected romance.
