I didn’t realize until I was most of the way through that this was the “adapted for young readers” version of the book. That would explain a lot of my feelings that this was too simple and too dramatized as compared to other books in this genre of non-fiction.
The book was over all over an interesting topic (at least in my opinion), but it was hard to understand. There were two tankers that split in half over the coast in the gulf of Mexico during one of the worst noreasters there has ever been there, the crews were almost frozen do death. But after that it gets a little fuzzy, it was hard for me to know witch boat was witch. They both had the same situation both were the same kind of boat, same crew amount. So it was a little hard to follow what was
The Finest Hours is the gripping, true tale of a heroic effort to rescue the souls huddled within the separated halves of the two ships. Coast Guard cutters rushed to the assistance of those at Fort Mercer, and when it became obvious that half of the Pendleton was in danger of capsizing, the Guard also sent out two thirty-six-foot lifeboats. These wooden vessels, manned by just four seamen, were dwarfed by the wide seventy-foot seas. The story is about the history of Chatham, dating back to the n...
Such a great story of the men who risked their lives in the middle of a terrible storm to save the men stranded on tankers that had ripped apart in the middle of the ocean.
Oliver Langham / The Finest Hours / Michael J. Tougias & Casey ShermanFor my fourth and final deep book of my freshman year,, I read The Finest Hours by Michael J. Tougias & Casey Sherman. The Finest Hours is a true story about brave Coast Guards that saved 70 people in one night. On February 18, 1952,during a severely- harsh storm two oil tankers off the coast of Cape Cod are torn in half. With the storm in full force and waves up to seventy feet high, four US Coast Guardsmen head out to sea in...
Okay this is supposed to be another most daring sea rescue. Let's find out if it is true. The other book I read about the great work of the coast guard's was a very well written book: Hope this is another good book.It is quite intriguing to realise what scary work the coast guards have to do sometimes. You do hear or read about the navy or the air force but less so over the coast guards so I like that this book shows their bravery.Have read about 1/5th so far and in the beginning you get a
I watched the Disney movie based on the adult book back in January 2017. It was great (read: Chris Pine and Eric Bana provided eye-candy) and one of the special features of the DVD was the screenwriters interviewing survivors/witnesses and showing stuff from the museum. I had made a point of wanting to read the book, so when the 2018 PS challenge came out and the first prompt was "book that was made into a movie you've already seen" I knew which book I would read for it. Here's the deal - I don...
Wonderful, real-life story of Coast Guard rescues!
This book is a rewriting of The Perfect Storm for younger readers (middle school and up). I got it for my 12 yo son and when he didn't want to read it, I decided I wanted to! I never read The Perfect Storm or saw the movie so I didn't know much about the premise. Wow! What a story! My eyes were practically bugging out as I read the unbelievable unfolding of events. As for the writing, it was effective, but I found myself wondering how much better it would be if someone like Erik Larson took a st...
I have the physical copy of the scholastic version, edited slightly for a student audience, but I listened to the full version on audio. Besides some shuffling of material towards the end and omitting some minor details, there did not seem to be much difference between the two versions. Our town library was able to host an event with the author Michael Tougias a few years ago. I’m glad I finally read the story of this amazing adventure and those amazing people!
“The Finest Hours” ReviewDaring, heroic, disaster, excitement, adrenaline and terror all describe “The Finest Hours”. “The Finest Hours” is an amazing story of a treacherous sea rescue mission, taking place off the coast of Cape Cod during a howling Nor'easter. This adrenaline filled book by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman is a must read for anyone who is looking for an amazing survival story.Just off the coast of Cape Cod an intense Nor’easter hit turning the seas into a living nightmare f...
Teens looking for an action-packed novel that puts them in the middle of the dangerous situations, will love this true tale of heroism and survival. In 1952, during one of the most treacherous winter storms on record, the U.S. Coast Guard set out to try to rescue sailors who were stranded when not one, but two, separate oil tankers were literally wrenched into half by the stormy seas that were producing 70 foot waves. These waters off of Cape Cod are one of the most dangerous places on the sea and...
3.5 stars. This was my son's version of the book he brought home from the Scholastic Book Fair rather than the original version. I probably would've done better reading the original for myself. My son enjoyed this one, and the actual event is incredibly captivating. The storytelling of it was just a little drier than I would've expected.
This one is a 3.5 for me, and the authors do a fine job of putting readers right into the midst of this rescue at sea back in 1952. Two oil tankers near Cape Code are torn apart during a fierce storm, and local Coast Guard members try to reach them. Readers will be caught up in the suspense and be uncertain of the fate of the ships and the men aboard them as man battles Mother Nature. Since there are two ships involved, the narrative can become confusing at times as the story moves from one ship...
This is the kind of true life story that grips you. Even though I had seen the Disney rendition a couple of times prior to reading the book, I still felt the same angst, fear, and tension as if I were hearing about it for the first time. This book is written in a narrative style, like a newspaper account almost. It's not like historical fiction, so it's helpful to keep that in mind. It also switches between points of view (there are 4 different rescue sites) which can get confusing. Having seen
This version of the bestseller is adapted for younger readers and is still intense enough that I'm glad I read this version instead of the adult version. In Feb. 1952 a furious storm hit the Northeastern United States and Atlantic Ocean. Two oil tankers were broken in two by the storm. It was unusual for one ship to break apart, but for two to break within miles of each other was unheard of. The US Coast Guard sent crews into the storm to attempt rescues. Amazingly, most of the stranded sailors
The book tells the amazing true story of the coast guard rescue of crewmen from two tankers broken in half during a terrible storm off the coast of Cape Cod in February 1952. One Coast Guard crew in particular shows tremendous courage and determination piloting a small rescue boat through 50-60 foot waves to save 32 sailors from one of the tankers. The emotions of the men and their families are conveyed subtly but movingly. Prior to reading this book, I knew nothing about what was possibly the g...
This book was really good, the suspense and the urge of wanted to know what happens next. There is a lot of action, there are backstories, and the fact this is a true story makes it even better! You get to know the heroes in this book and the people who help saved lives. All in all this book is fantastic and you should definitely go ahead and read it.
If you only saw the movie you know only half the story and I mean 1/2.
The book was boring at the beginning but got way more interesting at the mid way point. Overall a good book.
