Originally published in 1911 as a portion of the author’s larger “Stories of Shakespeare’s Tragedies,” and equivalent in length to a physical book of approximately 30 pages, this Kindle edition retells, in plain English, the story of Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.”
“Hamlet” is founded upon an old Danish story of one of the kings of Denmark, who killed his brother and then married the widowed queen and succeeded to the throne. Hamlet, the son, is visited by his father’s ghost, who reveals the horrible story to him, and the play is the story of Hamlet’s vengeance. Interwoven is the beautiful love story of Hamlet and the young noblewoman Ophelia.
Sample passage:
Staggered by what he has seen and heard, the prince wonders body and soul do not dissolve, but vows he will forget all save the task his father imposed, to avenge his murder upon the man who can “smile, and smile, and be a villain.” To make sure not to forget any item, he notes down the Ghost’s words, just as his companions, who have been vainly seeking for him, rush upon the scene. He answers their exclamations and questions in such enigmatical terms that they are sorely mystified; then, deeming it wise all should go about their business, Hamlet adds the request that they keep secret all they have seen and heard.
