Gayl Ness was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1929 and has had a long life as an academic sociologist focusing on the intricate relation between global population growth, economic development, and environmental change. He has degrees from the University of Copenhagen and the University of California, Berkeley .

Following his doctorate in 1961, he spent four years in Southeast Asia on a post-doctoral fellowship from the Institute of Current World Affairs, studying the organization of economic development. This also introduced him to Asia, which has been a life-long interest.

Ness joined the Sociology department of the University of Michigan in 1964, where he spent his entire academic career. He served in many capacities in Sociology, the College of Environment and Natural Resources, the School of Public Health, and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. In addition to scores of scientific papers, his major books include Bureaucracy and Rural Development in Malaysia , The Sociology of Economic A Reader ; The Land in Population Planning in Asia ; Population Environment Ideas and Observation Population and Strategies for National Sustainable Development, with Meghan Golay 1997); Five Modeling Asian Urban Population Development ; Asian Urbanization for the New Millennium .

With his wife, Kathleen, he continues to live and work in Ann Arbor, Michigan. [email protected]
