Mehr als 40 Jahre war Barbara Klemm an den Brennpunkten des Zeitgeschehens. Als Fotografin der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung wurde sie Zeugin von zahlreichen Schlüsselereignissen der Epoche: Willy Brandt 1973 im Gespräch mit Leonid Breschnew, umringt von Beratern und Journalisten; die Nelkenrevolution 1974 in Portugal; Papst Johannes Paul II. bei seiner ersten Polenreise in den Jahren der Solidarnosz, Michail Gorbatschow 1989 am 40. Jahrestag der DDR in Ost-Berlin; Vaclav Havel 1990 freudig in der Prager Burg; der Fall der Mauer und die deutsche Vereinigung.
Viele andere haben diese Momente ebenfalls fotografiert, doch Barbara Klemm hat die Bilder geschaffen, die sich ins kollektive Gedächtnis eingeschrieben haben.
Immer sind es die Menschen, auf die Barbara Klemm ihr Augenmerk richtet - seien sie mächtig oder arm, bürgerlich oder exzentrisch. So ist es auch das Porträt, dem ihre besondere Leidenschaft gilt. In den Bildern von Künstlern, Musikern und Literaten spürt Barbara Klemm den ausgeprägtesten Charakterzügen des Menschen nach und vereinigt Erfahrungen, die sonst als gegensätzlich empfunden werden: comédie humaine und condition humana.
Der Band erscheint zur großen Retrospektive im Berliner Martin-Gropius-Bau - ein faszinierender Querschnitt durch Barbara Klemms einzigartiges Werk.

For more than 40 years, Barbara Klemm was at the flashpoint of current affairs. As a photographer for the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung, she witnessed numerous defining moments of the epoch: Willy Brandt in talks with Leonid Brezhnev in 1973, surrounded by advisors and journalists, the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974, Pope John Paul II on his first Polish trip in the years of Solidarnosz, Mikhail Gorbachev at the 40th anniversary of the GDR in East Berlin, 1989, an elevated Václav Havel at Prague Castle in 1990, the fall of the Wall, and German reunification.
Barabara Klemm has always focused her attention on people - no matter whether powerful of poor, conventional or eccentric. Accordingly, the medium of the portrait is where her greatest passion lies. In her pictures of artists, musicians and writers, Barbara Klemm traces the most prominent features of each personality and unites experiences that are usually felt to be contradictory: the comédie humaine and the human condition.
This volume was published to accompany a retrospective exhibition at the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, and offers a fascinating cross section of Barbara Klemm's unique photographic oeuvre.
