Kivalina: Global Warming Litigation Is Heating Up

On February 26, 2008 the Inupiat Eskimo tribe of Kivalina in northern Alaska filed a complaint under public and private nuisance law and conspiracy in the Northern District of California against several oil and gas companies. The village is suing the companies for their role in causing and denying global warming and causing the massive ice melt that threatens their existence. The company?s actions, plaintiffs claim, are forcing them to relocate their village. If Kivalina wins this legal battle, it has the potential to open the door for others to sue under similar theories and create a legal nightmare for oil and gas companies in the United States.
