Set in 1990's Peckham, three first person charcters tell their interwoven story:

Brian Walters - forty-five-year-old virgin; friend of Lorna's from university; office worker; overweight; gifted poet; lives in squalor in a run-down Peckham high-rise ... 'Eating is like aspirin to me' ...

Jet Robinson - fifteen; illiterate; leader of the 'Jays' who take and drive away other people's cars, nick stuff, cause aggravation - 'We ain't racist. A boots a boot. Don't matter what colour the foot is in it...innit!

Lorna Simons - fifty something; songwriter; poet; teaches at Peckham Individual Tuition Centre for kids not in school; grieving over ex-lover Tony Lode who left her a year previously; now lives alone in a large house in East Dulwich - 'Victim of the sixties, smoking the hash, dropping the acid, toting the guitar, children at my feet...'
