How to Prepare a Sermon

How to Prepare a Sermon

0/5 ( ratings)
This book is for preachers, at every experience level; most can reduce their average sermon preparation time by hours. How to Prepare a Sermon serves as a primer for young preachers who have little or no experience in sermon preparation, yet is also helpful for well trained, highly experienced pros. Using these basic tips on sermon preparation, will insure that you never again go into the pulpit unprepared.
Everyone has dreaded the looming deadline to prepare a sermon? Pastors face the daunting task of preparing several sermons each week. They are working under a deadline and have other duties which steal time from this basic task. Some preachers work at a secular job, while being pastor of a church. Pastors of large churches deal with countless congregational needs, which are part of being in the ministry, but eat away sermon prep time. Hours simply slip away. Every pastor has duties that drain time and energy from effective sermon preparation. We want to spend time with our families too. It is easy to come up empty on Sunday morning. I’ve been there and done that.
I was pastor of a church and also a commissioned salesman. A commission salesman’s job is pressure filled. You must sell, sell, sell, or you don’t get a paycheck. The time demands are relentless.
Demands on a pastor’s time are relentless. A pastor visits the sick as well as prospective members. He counsels members about their problems, witnesses to the lost, and still prepares sermons each week. Ministers in large churches, usually do not have a secular job, but have a heavier work load from ministry. They deal with a staff, committees, civic and religious obligations. They have no time for themselves, or their family, but must produce fresh material for preaching.
No wonder some of God’s finest men reach a critical moment when they simply ‘burn out.’
I faced these difficulties and found some answers. There are ways to streamline the sermon preparation process without diluting the quality of your preaching. These steps are tested for topical, textual, or expository sermons.
When time allows; immerse yourself in hours of Bible study. Nothing compares to the sheer pleasure of spending time with God in His Word. Most preachers relish an opportunity to hibernate with their Bible and spend hours alone with God in sermon preparation. Unfortunately, this is rarely possible.
This century has given us computer libraries, online study sites and books in print; technology lets us take giant steps that men of previous generations only wished were available. Solid, scholarly, Biblical tools are available to save you hours each week. This book will help you avoid time-consuming mistakes.
You too can take the giant steps that shorten the distance between the starting block and prime time.
Advance planning of preaching can save hours and relieve frustration. Discover how to prepare series of sermons, or how to preach through books of the Bible.
The study required to preach through a book of the Bible improves Bible study skills, and helps you learn new methods of preaching to present the truth of God’s word. Preachers who are new to expository preaching might choose a book which has lots of good stories. In the New Testament, the gospels and Acts are excellent choices. Genesis and the two books of Samuel are prime examples of Old Testament books full of good stories for preaching. As our skills improve, we find great texts in every book of the Bible … It’s all God’s word, and the gospel can be preached from every book.
The tested steps found here, will show you how to prepare great sermons. You will be able to preach any text God places on your heart. In God’s amazing wisdom, He does not call people who are already equipped, but He equips those whom He calls. He will help you. Be faithful to Him!
