When New York Rabbi Max Rabinowitz repairs a damaged Torah from a small Oregon synagogue, he never realized how it would change his life. Within the Torah Max finds the secrets of hidden treasure, rememberences of his escape from Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, and discovering the true events of his father's death. Strange, Max discovers this completed Torah was found deep in Saint Nichola Church, Prague, after the Russians left. Finally the Torah took a remarkable journey to Oregon, New York, and back to Prague.

Max discovers a hidden map in the damaged Torah. A map to the location of stolen priceless Van Gogh paintings and valuable artifacts his father hid before the German invasion. Thus starts a treasure hunt within the sewers below Prague. Unknown to Max are powerful men also looking for the treasures, and are willing to kill for the map.

This thrilling treasure hunt began with the discovery of the Torah in Saint Nicholas Church, is highlighted by search for Van Gogh paintings, the German invasion of Czechosolovakia, and eighty thousand Jews who perished in the Holocaust. It is also a romantic adventure story of Max with his son Avi finding love, wealth, and their Jewish roots.
