The Carpenter family take in a young orphaned Jewish girl after her father has been murdered and as a result they are forced to leave their village. They take up residence in York and become involved with the Jewish community there and as a result, young Dicken Carpenter is caught up in the anti-Semitic riots in London at the coronation of Richard I and in the pogrom in York in 1190 when around 150 Jews lost their lives.
