The Bible--You Can Believe It

The Bible--You Can Believe It

We are living in an age unlike any in American history. It’s as though the North Pole has been removed from the globe and our compasses no longer work.We once lived in an era of objective truth and accepted moral standards. In the 1950s, when Ward Cleaver came home from work, his family sat down to dinner together—Ward in his suit and June in her dress and pearls, while Wally and the Beaver ate quietly and respectfully. Although they didn’t know it, the Cleavers were the last stop on the road to a changing world. It would not be long before the Vietnam War divided the nation, the sexual revolution and drug culture made the news each night, and commitment to objective values was attacked from all sides. In fact, the cultural earthquakes of the 1960s are still shaking the foundations of our churches today, with no end in sight. Now for the first time in history, three different worldviews are trying to sit in the same pew on Sunday morning. The World War II generation remembers a day when parents were in charge and biblical authority was unquestioned. Their children are the legacy of the 60s and its rejection of objective truth and values, including those of Scripture. Their grandchildren are heirs of the technological revolution, less interested in biblical “truth” but fascinated with “spirituality.” How did the world change so much, so quickly? Further, how can Christians explain and defend a commitment to biblical authority in this new century? Why should we? Such questions and their answers are what this study is about. Subtitled "Biblical Authority in the Twenty-First Century," this study will provide help in understanding the Bible and its authority. The book was written with Baptists in mind, but Christians of many denominations will find the information and insights helpful. The chapter titles indicate the thrust of the 1. The Bible Is God’s Book; 2. The Bible Is a Book for All, Not Just a Few; 3. The Bible Is a Trustworthy Book; 4. The Bible Is Confirmed by Internal Evidence; 5. The Bible Is Confirmed by External Evidence; 6. The Bible Is the Book God Meant Us to Have; 7. The Bible Tells of God’s Miraculous Acts; -8. The Bible Is an Attractive Book; 9. The Bible Is an Inspired Book; 10. The Bible Is a Practical Book; 11. The Bible Is a Relevant Book
