A Face in the Crowd: Expressions of Gay Life in America

John Peterson
0/5 ( ratings)
We are pleased to enclose a powerful new photo and essay book titled "A Face in the Crowd" Expressions of Gay Life in America. The book, funded by the Matthew Shepard Foundation, seeks to educate and empower today's youth to actively take part in developing solutions to problems that are rooted in ignorance and hatred.

Young people coming of age today must sort through an overwhelming barrage of conflicting information about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. From sources as diverse as Eminem and Dr. Laura to teachers, counselors and fellow students, the messages often portray GLBT people in an unfavorable or even hateful light.

There is also a lack of timely, comprehensive, and current information available for use in classrooms, gay/straight support groups, and at home. "A Face in the Crowd" is a step forward in filling this gap.

The book, which features a cover photo by renowned photographer David LaChapelle, presents a collection of current images of GLBT people from all walks of life.

"A Face in the Crowd" presents positive role models for young people to help combat the negative influences that may permeate their lives.

"A Face in the Crowd" also features essays and quotes from former Vice President Al Gore, Melissa Etheridge, Ellen DeGeneres, Grethe Cammermeyer, Martina Navratilova, Senator Barney Frank, Senator Barbara Boxer and a host of others The forward was written by Betty DeGeneres with an introduction by Judy and Dennis Shepard, who's son, Matthew, was the victim of a gay hate crime.

"If the gay community hadn't been a mystery, my son would still be here," said Judy Shepard. In keeping with the mission of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, it is the Shepard's hope that "A Face in the Crowd" will educate and enlighten on the importance of embracing diversity with acceptance, respect and understanding.
