(B+) 78% | GoodNotes: It uses villains as soundboards, distillers of character, against whom heroes quench mettle in waters of peril and fear.
Whoa, I dunno what I'm more shocked about. The fact I am LOVING a Wonder Woman series OR if I love a Azzarello book. Either way, I love both. So Wonder Woman is still protecting Zola and her baby. At this point you'd think you would be bored of this type of storyline. However, The First is now tricked...or more, bought in to helping one of the gods against Wonder Woman and her crew. On top of that another god makes an attack to finish Zola and her baby off. What happens when the first come forw
Well plotted and scripted! The art is not my favorite style; it is, however, good looking and consistent and clear -- and very supportive of the plot and dialog.
So much good storytelling momentum. I'm reading this just after slogging through Hickman's Avengers (Prelude To Infinity), and the contrast couldn't be more clear. I tried five times to pick that other one up, and finally ended it. This book, I'm flying through because even when there's no significant developments, it doesn't linger on scenes any longer than it has to. Get in, make your point, and get out. Beautiful. Long scenes don't have to be bad - Bendis mastered the pages-long characters-te...
Finally, we get some resolution to what's dragged on for the first TWO YEARS of this title. I think maybe if Azzarello had condensed the first 3 into 2, that would have flowed better and moved forward at a better pace. Instead, it really seemed like: Yes. A slow mo punch in the face.Luckily, this volume picks up; though I'm still not confident enough to give it 4 stars...3+ then? This is War. Literally. Old Man War is a washed up God, but don't count him out...First Born looks to have defeated h...
Wonder Woman volume four ended with something which is both spectacular and very heartfelt. This may very well change the status quo of Wonder Woman being not just an amazon princess, (view spoiler)[but also went full Kratos and becomes the God of War (hide spoiler)]!The Wonder Woman vs First Born fight, though something to look forward to in this volume, is not the main attraction of this book.Think of the story of as a sort of mid-season finale of Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman run. The Olympu...
I shouldn't be surprised that this was awful. There are so many reasons for it:- bad writing. The pacing is all over the place, and the story arc still hasn't even ended, after 4 volumes. Most every other New 52 title I've read has had a story contained within their 6ish issue frame, so that each volume tells a nice, short story. This has been going on forever, with no end in sight.- Can we stop having men harass Diana? Four times, Orion has said something awful, which makes her at one point thr...
Diana has to fight Artemis and well other threats and the inner politics of Olympus takes place and it's awesome to see the results of it and the emergence of the first born and Diana knowing about it fully and then comes Orion to rescue them and the results of that reunion and travelling to New Genesis and coming back for one final war with the first born and that ending holy shit! It's such a great volume and really changes the status quo in such a big way and I love it! Diana was fierce in th...
You know, it's not the Wonder Woman I grew up with, and it's not the Wonder Woman that I would like to see stick around for forever, but as an experiment in Wonder Woman-ology, I would say this story-arc has yielded amazing results. Brilliant storytelling with Brian Azzarello at the helm, impeccably paced, steeped in symbols and modern themes, tension, suspense, catharsis... This is the stuff that is becoming rare in comic books today. For me, it is the script that has made this series, and espe...
Also reviewed for Addicted2Heroines.You're slowly worming your way into my heart, Azzarello...I'll admit that it's the ending that pushed this one up from three to four stars for me. Not that it's a bad story, it was just more of the same old same old.Wonder Woman (and her surly band of unlikely heroes) fight the gods to save Magic Baby.Second verse, same as the first...Again, it's not bad.I'm just not that into you.I like you, but I don't like you like you.You know?Anyhoo, I finally saw the lig...
So it's been a while since I read the last album of this series, but I didn't have any trouble getting back on track, thanfully. This volume was actionpacked and a lot of fun. I enjoyed the twist at the end, and the arcs. Can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series
Zeus’s First-Born is swallowed by Poseiden, which just pisses him off more. Orion keeps disrespecting Wonder Woman by calling her “Legs”, so she gets pissed and kisses him (???), which makes his face turn all ugly and he runs out of the room. Lennox sacrifices himself for the greater good. The gang ends up in Jack Kirby’s New Genesis. The final showdown between Wonder Woman and the First-Born ends in tragedy for one of the Olympians.Lots of crazy stuff going on in Volume 4, “War”, of Brian Azzar...
A finale worth 2 years in the making!I've really enjoyed the new Wonder Woman series from Azzarello and Chiang and though it has had it's ups and downs and Chiang has been missing throughout (my biggest complaint of the series thus far) the finale of this grand 23 issue arc was well worth the wait:World: This time around Chiang is around more and the art shows, Sudzuka is also amazing (just like in Y the last man) so the yeah the art was fine. The framing, the line work the colors and the art de...
Linda Carter. The one and only Wonder Woman. Also responsible for the repeated laundering of my bed sheets in the early 80’s. Couldn’t get through another review without at least one gif of the first woman I ever loved. So how about the book? Diana and her crew have finally come together like one big happy family. At least until she threatens to rip Orion’s nuts off. I’m wondering if the kids can pull it together long enough to face off against the First Born and have them all make it out in on
This was my favorite volume so far, primarily because of what was for me a surprise ending I won't spoil for you. Nothing really had surprised me much so far. The build was slow, maybe too complicatedly slow for the proposed scope of the series, but I was still engaged with it. I don't know why saving this particular Last Born Baby from the Last Born was so all fired important, really, but some of the dialogue is good, and surprises are good. Have never been the fan of Chiang's art here as other...
I noticed that this comic seems to get a lot of good scores. I'm not that sure why. The artwork is, at best, pedestrian. The story? Meh. Ares, the God of War, is now a balding old man who knows kung-fu. *sighs* WTF happened to the gargantuan black armored, red-eyed killer from previous Wonder Woman titles? Who knows? So Zeus has gone off to the Old God's Retirement Facility. Apollo has taken it upon himself to become the Supreme Greek God..oh and he's turned himself into a purplish-black creature...
2'5*There were some parts that I liked and some that I didn't, for instance, I wasn't so keen on the part about Orion's home... I am also getting a little bored with the First Born... But Lenox's and War's stories were great, and so was seeing Diana "struggling" with her power and control over it.Makes you wonder how they are going to wrap everything they are unraveling with this series.
We get so much in this volume. We get to discover what happened to Cassandra’s neck. It is so much worse than you could think. We find out the name of Zola’s son. It’s not Wonder Woman’s choice of Steve. Wonder Woman and Co go toe to toe with the First Born, who proves just how scummy and dangerous he is. We find out more about Orion, who faces his own struggle of conscience. But honesty, that scene where Diana calls Orion out about his sexist behavior, kisses him, and then grabs him by the bal...
Well that changes everything!! A very fitting conclusion to the first arc and it opens up a world of new possibilities for Wonder Woman. Although I’m a bit sad seeing two main players killed off but such is life in the comic book world. I really think this is still the best book DC is putting out (although Batman and Swamp Thing are right on its heels) and hope Azzarello and Chiang stay on this a long time.
While I'de give this series to date 4-stars, this book was kind of a letdown. At the end I was sort of...meh, about it. http://saraandmikeoncomics.wordpress....
