Running In Circles: How To Find Freedom From Addictive Behavior

Running In Circles: How To Find Freedom From Addictive Behavior

Edward T. Welch
3/5 ( ratings)
What is the relationship between addiction and God? Some view God as a mere therapist, who is concerned with our bad behavior only to the extent that it harms the addict. Others view God as a savior from sin who simply tells addicts to pull themselves together. Running in Circles seeks out the truth from both sides. It is written in a simple, direct style and is suitable as a gift.

In 1980, newly married, I suddenly developed a terrible headache and a fever. I was hospitalized, and it turned out that viral meningitis had inflamed the meninges, membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. When my wife asked if it was catching, the doctor said, ?Sure, but the virus that did this might just give you a sore throat. It just happens that this time it infected this certain membrane.?

Sin is not a disease! But like that virus, it can produce different symptoms throughout the population: one person is a miser, another a big spender; one a sanctimonious churchgoer, another an upright atheist.

Addiction has its own warning signs, but it?s caused by the same bug that draws people into compulsive gambling, habitual violence, or even the occasional ?white lie.? They are expressions of the systematic failure that is shared by all.

But hasn?t science proven that certain people drink because of their genes? No! The bottom line in scientific research is that genes do not force people to be alcoholics. For example, we know that the majority of children of drinking parents do not themselves drink heavily. If there is an inherited tendency to alcoholism, then personal choices and other factors will still go in to the final determination of who gets hooked.

Besides, you don?t really want to embrace the philosophy of ?determinism,? blaming your failures on something outside yourself. Even if that were possible, it would render your choices truly meaningless. In most circumstances, you agree with the Bible that individuals should be held responsible for their actions...
