Rings of Anubis perfectly balances adventure and romance, offering deep characters and a fun romp all in one. The place where the novel really shone for me was in the settings. Tobler brings each location - from the Paris Exposition to the deserts of Egypt - to stunning life with rich, sensual detail. Are you more plot oriented or character oriented? The reason I ask is that if you are plot-oriented, this Steampunkery/Egyptian mythology adventure might frustrate you a little. I'll admit outright: I judge books by their covers. One look at this cover and I would never have picked this book up in a store. It came to me by a stroke of luck. Last year, through the Geeks Doing Good campaign, I purchased a ten-book box with a random assortment of novels. It happened to include this one. I am so happy I gave it a chance. I loved this book. The characters and the world building are so engaging. I was drawn in from the start. Don't let the cover put you off.
I'm not normally into the whole romance reading but I did enjoy this book, it had adventure and a little bit of action mixed into it with a few "changes" (people who've read it will know what I'm talking about, well hopefully lol) I liked the changes of scenery from Paris to Egypt and also found myself smiling at a few funny moments shared in the book. I personally would've enjoyed it more with some more heart stopping action but it was still a good read
Unrelated things first, because it's been bugging me: I would really like to know what the mixed-drink version of this book would taste like. This is one of those books I'll admit I put off finishing because I didn't really want it to end. The author created a lovely world, but didn't bash me over the head with a feeling of "This is Steampunk- you're reading Steampunk!" She also cultivated some charming, sympathetic characters with believable motivations and pursuits. I wasn't sure about this, as the opening made the protagonist seem a bit "perky," which I'm pretty allergic to. But that fell away quickly, and then this book was engaging and fun. Disclosure: I know the author from social media, etc.A steampunk novel with an Egyptology angle, which is kind of weird. I can't think of many other steampunk books with this same setting. Tastes like light adventure and will amuse steampunk fans and people who liked watching Indiana Jones movies. Part of, not a trilogy, but apparently a duology which is also rare these days.
Rings of Anubis is a rollicking adventure novel that follows Eleanor Folley and Virgil Mallory as they work together to solve the mystery of Eleanor's mother's disappearance. I loved the teamwork between Folley and Mallory, and how they interacted with each other. It was refreshing to see two people grow closer without having a petty problem come between them. This was a fun and charming read. This isn't a book I would have picked up on my own, but time travel and Egyptian gods? What's not to like?
Light, fun and a pleasing combo of lycanthropes, steampunk, Egypt and a little romance. Somehow it all works.
This hit all the sweet spots for me. I loved the characters, the setting, the adventure... Folley and Mallory are great and also great together, and I look forward to reading more!
I got this title from a twitter thread where someone was asking for recommendations of Indiana Jones-like lady protagonists, and this book did not disappoint (and I went straight on to the next one as soon as I'd finished). It's got archaeology! It's got adventure! It's got werewolves! It's got humor! It's got romance! t's got a little bit of steampunk!If you love Indiana Jones and Lara Croft (including their supernatural bits) definitely give this a read. I'm on board for the entire series.
