Nearly twenty years ago, Malinda Nesbitt packed up her belongings and ventured off to college hundreds of miles away from home, leaving behind her life, her family and her problems. She never looked back.
Now a freelance documentarian and vagabond with a penchant for promiscuity and recreational drug use, irreverent 35 year-old Malinda travels the world poised behind a camera, living in hotels and the backseats of cars, plucking her wardrobe from duffel bags and suitcases, too afraid to put down roots.
Malinda must face her fears when she comes back her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio to tell the lesser-known side of one of the biggest crime stories in the city’s recent history. Heather Reed was recently released from prison for brutally murdering her uncle when she was a teenager. Malinda’s ambition is to prove Heather’s defense—that her uncle molested her for years. The defense that didn’t cut it in court became Malinda’s secret obsession since she first read it in the newspaper as a child.
While peeling back the layers of Heather’s case, Malinda rediscovers the life from which she spent years running away. Unexpected collisions with people from her past lead to turbulent family reunions, passionate moments with new and former lovers and the reawakening of decades-old painful memories. She persists with Heather’s story despite a palpable fear that if she stays in Cleveland too long, the self she crafted will be lost, engulfed in the her own tumultuous history.
