The Birth of the Christian Religion

The Birth of the Christian Religion

Gilbert Murray
4/5 ( ratings)
Alfred Firmin Loisy was a French Roman Catholic priest, professor & theologian, an intellectual standardbearer for Biblical Modernism. He criticized traditional views of the biblical creation myth. He argued that biblical criticism could be applied to interpreting scripture. His theological positions put him into conflict with leading Catholics of his era, including Popes Leo XIII & Pius X. In 1893, he was dismissed as an Institut Catholique de Paris professor. The Vatican condemned his books. In 1908 he was excommunicated. He observed that "Jesus came preaching the Kingdom & what arrived was the Church" . He's often taken to have said that with some regret . For all his clashes with the hierarchy, he did think Jesus intended to form some sort of community, but not the aping of civil government .
