The language and especially the imagery is superb. Just due to personal associations with the subject matter, I didn't enjoy it as much as the other stories by Karen Russell.
Read in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2015A young couple decide to escape to the south-western United States on their first date. While visiting Joshua Tree National Park one of them becomes host to their airborne method of reproduction.I like that this story has a real world setting that I have seen and visited myself. Makes me think twice about stopping and smelling the flowers.

I'll take it as a c...
The imagery, rich descriptions, and engrossingly disturbing plot of this compact, slice of life with a twist tale held my attention. I admire how a story-teller can take a seemingly innocent moment in time for the protagonists and blow it up by a simple action; in this case a finger prick by a cactus.
Sucked me into its world for a bit there.Felt a bit like Hunter S. Thompson, but not so dialed to 11, and a bit like Stephen King, but outside of his element and with a more poetic style. Great example of one sort of 'mythic realism' I'm just starting to clumsily grok.
Now I've got to visit Joshua Tree Natl pk
