The Origin and Early History of the Russia or Muscovy Company

The Origin and Early History of the Russia or Muscovy Company

Samuel Purchas
0/5 ( ratings)
During the reign of Edward VI a group of merchants came together, under the inspiration of Sebastian Cabot, to finance an expedition to attempt a north east passage to China and the East Indies. They called themselves "The Mystery and Company of Merchant Adventurers for the Discovery of Regions, Dominions, Island, and places unknown." They sent out three ships one of which, the Edward Bonaventura piloted by Richard Chancellor, reached the coast of Russia and began "that amicable intercourse and profitable commerce which has continued for so many years."

The book continues the story of the Muscovy Company through to 1610, and concludes with a brief history of the establishment of the Whale Fishery.

For fans of Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles, this book adds some background to the events of The Ringed Castle.
