Enoch Powell's "Rivers of Blood" Speech 1968

Enoch Powell's "Rivers of Blood" Speech 1968

Enoch Powell
3.9/5 ( ratings)
This is a transcription of Enoch Powell's famous and controversial "Rivers of Blood" speech which he gave to the General Meeting of the West Midlands Area Conservative Political Centre in Birmingham on Saturday, 20 April, 1968.

Powell's speech is known as the "Rivers of Blood" speech because of his line "Like the Roman, I seem to see the River Tiber foaming with much blood".

In his speech, Powell attacks the government's immigration policy and calls for an immediate reduction in the 50,000 immigrants coming into Britain each year at that time. He predicted that by the year 2000, one in ten of the population would be of immigrant descent. With his references to 'negroes' and 'piccaninnies', Powell's speech caused a political storm.

Despite the applause received during and after his 45 minute speech, Powell was dismissed from the Shadow Cabinet by Tory leader Edward Heath and politically marginalised for his views.
