MIKTA, Middle Powers, and New Dynamics of Global Governance: The G20's Evolving Agenda

MIKTA, Middle Powers, and New Dynamics of Global Governance: The G20's Evolving Agenda

Jongryn Mo
2/5 ( ratings)
Since the leaders' level in 2008, the G20 has established itself as the premier forum for international economic cooperation. It proved effective in enhancing international policy coordination at a time in which critical challenges in the international financial system called for a mechanism that could bring together key industrial and emerging economies. In response to these systemic changes and pressing challenges, a ministerial meeting was undertaken with the aim to establish an informal consultation and collaboration platform between Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia . To prepare for the initiative in 2013, the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Korea gathered a group of distinguished policymakers and scholars to discuss how middle powers at the MIKTA countries within the G20 cooperate with each other to advance global governance in emerging global issue areas. This volume presents the results of the 2013 conference, which brought into focus the importance of understanding middle powers and targeting gaps in existing international efforts that can benefit from new leadership. The Asan Institute for Policy Studies is an independent think tank located in Seoul, South Korea, that provides innovative policy solutions and spearheads public discourse on many of the core issues that Korea, East Asia, and the global community face. The goal of the institute is not only to offer policy solutions but also to train experts in public diplomacy and related fields in order to strengthen Korea's capacity to better tackle some of the most pressing problems affecting the country, the region, and the world today.
