Corpus Christi: Holy Communion and the Renewal of the Church

Corpus Christi: Holy Communion and the Renewal of the Church

Athanasius Schneider
0/5 ( ratings)
The Incarnation of God reaches its very peak of self-humiliation and self-abnegation in the mystery of the Eucharist. In this sacrament the mystery of the One Who is "God with us" reveals itself in an insuperable manner, with all the consequences of the incomparable love of God.

Christ is not only "God with us". He is God, Who in the little sacred host has delivered Himself into the hands of men, completely renouncing His own defense. The Eucharistic Jesus in the sacred host is truly the One Who is the most poor and the most defenceless in the Church, and this is what He becomes firstly during the distribution of Communion.

During the distribution of Communion one notices in our days the phenomenon of a surprising lack of sensibility and care regarding all the concrete requirements that should accompany the true and substantial presence of God Incarnated in the little sacred host. The necessary exterior acts of adoration, of sacred gestures and of caring in treating the sacred host are often reduced to a minimum. The exterior manner of treating the sacred host with minimalistic gestures of adoration gradually diminishes faith in the Incarnation and in the Eucharistic Transubstantiation, which becomes limited to a theoretical area.

The Eucharist is the very heart of the Church's life. When, therefore, the concrete worship of the Eucharistic God is objectively reduced, the heart of the Church's life will be wounded. The heart of the Church's life in our days needs to be healed of the manner in which the Eucharistic Jesus in the sacred host is treated. For the sacred host - even in its minutest fragment - is nothing less than the Lord Himself.
