"...and the Dalai lama was pleased..." got a little old.
This is a very important book. The Dalai Lama explains the importance of empathy and education reform for future generations. His positivity and genuine belief in the world's opportunity for progress in the next thirty or so years is inspiring. Applying his teachings practically, to elements of society such as politics and economic systems, the Dalai Lama goes beyond conscious sentiment to truly encourage ACTION. Psychology studies consistently serve as evidence for many of the claims made, inte...
A bunch of successful scientists and journalists travel around the world giving speeches, shilling their books and meeting Dalai Lama. And Dalai Lama says: "Compassion". Science agrees. What about our emotional well being? - Compassion, of course. What about economy? - Compassion. Politics? - Compassion. Science agrees, Dalai Lama is pleased. I'm honestly baffled how hollow this book feels to me, considering its subject. Every page throws a dozen names and studies and stories at you, coming to t...
The author definitely has the flair of bringing emotion into his writing. I am totally moved and touched by the words and stories but at the same time contemplated the message between the lines. This book humanised the Dalai Lama, bringing readers closer to what he advocates and I believe this would bring a force for good in us, or at least me in the future.
It took me ages to read because I kept coming back to it but every time I did, I found I was inspired/enlightened/motivated. Was a good read to end 2018 on and into 2019.
I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for a fair review. Before reading the book, I didn't know very much about the Dalai Lama, and I had hoped for more biographical information than was included. And I didn't necessarily agree with all of the connections and extrapolations the author made. However, the book made me think - a lot. And it convinced me that I need to do more to make the world a better place. Pick it up, read it, and think about it. And then go do something
Pretty interesting book that shares the general view of the Dalai Lama and how he uses his role in the world to spread compassion and do good. A recommended read for anyone who wants to think about how to help the world, or anyone who just feels burnt out when faced with the never-ending problems of the world. This book may relight your optimism and encourage you to continue your good work!
I won this book in a giveaway by Bloomsbury publishers and was most grateful. I've never read anything on the Dalai Lama but whatever I've heard or picked up regarding his teachings/philosophy on life resonated strongly with my own spiritual beliefs as a Muslim and as a Muslim who has spent some time studying the spiritual teachings of Mawlana Rumi. I was interested to read then, this book. It's a good book especially for someone who is newly considering broadening their horizons beyond the mater...
I so love the Buddhist philosophy of life. The Dalai Lama communicates this philosophy in such a straight forward down to earth way. You can feel his kindness and wisdom in his words. Applying this philosophy to one's life in the 21st century is a challenge. This did motivate me to download the Calm app and begin learning how to meditate.
Love this guy....lots of great ideas in here.... The political system is the not the problem it is the lack of moral principle that corrupts the system that is the problem. capitalism can only be a force for good if it is genuinely concerned about everyone. The success of an an economy should be measured in the well being of its people. Not our gdp our land wealth property or things. The ballooning wealth of a small percent drives up the gdp while the masses struggle. People want lasting happine...
Too much filler, like details about what the Dalai Lama wears, lots of kids sitting in lots of circles, how often he smiles and is pleased, how long he’s known many scientists and is great friends with (esp the author), how much travel he’s done around the world, etc. I expected more about his philosophy and how he applies it. A lot of the book rehashes info that is already well known. A good book for people who don’t already know anything about the Dalai Lama.
When it's based on the Dali Lahma, there are always deep thoughts and good advice involved. However, I did not enjoy this book nearly as much as the one with Desmond Tutu on joy. Parts of this seemed a bit disconnected and there was some repeat.
A wonderful book! I pretty much love everything I read about, or by The Dalai Lama. This book talks about how we must take action as individuals to create a better world, even though we may not see the real changes in our lifetime. Every little bit of good we do adds up and eventually this world can be a more compassionate place. Don't feel that the world's problems are too big to be fixed by just one person. We- every one of us 7 billion people on this planet have helped to cause all these prob...
I wanted to give this 4 stars, but something prevented me from it. There's something missing from this book. Perhaps it was a little too idealistic and lacking in reflection on certain global 'realities' that rationally shouldn't completely have been ommitted from a book such as this. This is obviously only just my opinion and my value statement.
There is so much I really loved about this book. It was not focused on religion but instead talked about moral accountability and compassion outside of religion. I didn't know much about the Dalai Lama before I read this book. It was informative and engaging with a challenging and inspiring vision for how the world and human interaction could be.
This time Dalai Lama shares his wisdom about how we can all contribute to world peace and harmony through the practice of compassion and empathy. As always his guidance is inspirational and insightful. A great lesson on how we must learn to step up, harness our positive energies and be a force of good in this world.
Nice book about what we have to do in our near future to make the world a better place, for us and for our children. Starting from the fact that we do not have to worry only for our kids but for all the children of the world, the Dalai Lama talks about his way of being in the world, a sort of Tibetan Mindfulness I can say, and then he starts to speak with Goleman about emotions, the famous "Kidness revolution" and the even more famous book by Thomas Piketty about capitalism and all the way it fa...
This books does it's job insofar as articulating the Dalai Lama's vision for the world. I feel like I have good understanding of what the man stands for: hopes, dreams, core beliefs. More importantly it tied all the my fragmented impressions of him together. I did feel that the writing was repetitive across the different parts, could have been written with more concision. Aside from that, I got what I wanted out of it!
Inspirational and thought provoking book which deserves five stars! This book has been the most inspirational and thought provoking book I have ever read to date.Daniel Goleman, I have to admit, I don’t really know much about this author, but the way he has written this book is simply magical. You get to see the Dalai Lama’s true personality and character through Goleman’s eyes and words. This is not a religious or spiritual book by any means, though a lot of people appear to have put this book i...
This book was recommended for me as something to help me in my fight to end the world. Because my mind was already framed for kind of a book, it made it very hard to keep reading when it felt more like a biography of the Dalai Lama. I did not finish the book since it did not hold my attention. My low rating is not a reflection of the quality of the writing, or the content overall. It is a reflection of my personal enjoyment of the book and the fact that it did not deliver what I was looking for....
