FLASHBACK EPISODES: Pages from a One-Time Kenneth the Page at the Real 30 Rock

FLASHBACK EPISODES: Pages from a One-Time Kenneth the Page at the Real 30 Rock

Ken Hommel
5/5 ( ratings)
In 1988, I began my career in television programming as an NBC page during a time when the network was a dominating force. During the eighteen-month program, pages do tours, work as assistants in various departments and seat audiences for studio tapings. Today's audiences will recognize the job from the Kenneth the Page character from recent NBC comedy "30 Rock." I will reminisce about starting out in the same building when David Letterman toiled at 12:30 a.m, "Saturday Night Live" celebrated its 15th anniversary with an all-star reunion special and executives moved around shows on hand-typed programming squares, including a pilot called "Seinfeld." There were about 50 of us, recent college graduates, looking for careers in broadcasting. The program became like an extension of college for us as we virtually lived in the building working seven-days-a-week. Many late nights meant going to "SNL" parties and then crashing on the sofas of the page lounge, then waking up the next morning to do tours. We called it "college with the stars" as you never knew what famous people would show up.
