The Killing of Mr. Floyd & Other Stories

The Killing of Mr. Floyd & Other Stories

D. Williams
4.3/5 ( ratings)
The Killing of Mr. Floyd & Other Stories is a collection of observations that began following the violent death of a childhood friend's uncle. As witness to this and other actions the author was a close and sometimes critical observer,of adults and children, surviving crisis during those childhood years in the rural southern United States and an adulthood in many locations.
During those witness years the author bumped into numerous folk in places; some should never be mentioned, whose names weren't so easily recognized at the time but may be today. The names are all that's left to give hints of lost places and times. Ray Charles, Martin Luther King Jr., Bill Cosby, Johnny Cash, The Isleys, Jesse Jackson, Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Angela Davis, Alex Haley are a few from past interactions that immediately comes to mind.

Floyd is a collection of stories reflecting some of the many ways we view ourselves and others interacting in various spaces. Herein are tales of times long past ans shorter presents; of places and folk nearly dead or dying. Starting with early memories of a four year old riding on his mother's sack; pulled through the fields as she, wearing a black polka dot 'head rag'; picked cotton out by the river near a small Arkansas town.

Observations then and now are filtered through those memories and interactions with 'Mama Tang' and a grandfather who spoke of his days down in the 'quarters' on the old Weeks Plantation when "...the soldiers from the North came...": Also with six siblings of that house at the end of the road called "Red Pike" on mail Route # 2 Box # 581, Gould Arkansas leading out of town toward Douglas and the river.

Beyond Arkansas, so far; on this day; peace, love and joy to us all; the story continues.
