Headwater LLC was a really great story, but sadly that sort of thing has become the exception rather than the rule for this publication which seems to concern itself more with the identity politics of its authors these days than the quality of stories.A shame. For a while, Lightspeed was really good.

Thought lots in here was fairly good but unexceptional, save for Headwaters LLC, which is a fantastic tale about the exploitation of the value in a rare resource, in this case something mythological and sentient.
It's always a pleasure to read (and listen to) stories written by Anne Leckie. And this was no disappointment. Quick Sips - Lightspeed #56Today I'm looking at Lightspeed #56. Four new stories, two of them science fiction and two of them fantasy. This is my first time reading Lightspeed magazine and this issue was just okay. While a few of the stories were very well done and made great use of the science fiction or fantasy theme others didn't go far enough or focused too much or romance and or didn't focus enough attention on the genre elements that were in their short stories.The novella and novel excerpts were very interesting and I must say that if this issue is anything to go by the Lightspeed certainly packs a lot into a reasonably
I've been reading Lightspeed for more than a year. I appreciate the mix of new and re-prints but this one feels "light" in some way that I haven't yet been able to articulate. I enjoyed "Beautiful Boys" (Theodora Goss) when I read it in Asimov's, but it didn't hold up that well on re-read. Maybe it was too recent a reprint?Fantasy is not my favorite genre, and this month's issue left me cold, there.
