Standing there in his shabby clothes, she could see the edges of old scars from wounds she’d stitched up herself. The gash that crossed his collarbone, the half-moon bite on his shoulder. The gouge that came out of his right forearm. That winter he’d learned to be a leftie and she’d hunted down the witch who did it to him, made sure the guy never hurt anyone ever again. She’d taken a bit of time with it too.

The two of them didn't have anything but their bodies to throw into the fight, and so their bodies bore the brunt of impact over and over. She knew that lean, solid body, Frank’s body, as well as she knew her own. She protected it more fiercely than she protected her own. And yet in that moment, heat dropping into her belly, hot nickel taste on her tongue, Sam wanted nothing more than to leap through the space between them and tear at his flesh, dig her fingers in until her wrists ran red. Put her mouth on him and not let go. She could see it in her mind’s eye. Vivid, outrageous, nothing she’d ever wished for before. Sam tried to blink it away, but the desire wouldn't leave.
