Nine-year-old Susannah was sent from England in the 1890s to visit a young uncle who was an officer in the Royal North-West Mounted Police - the 'Mounties' - living in barracks in Canada. Could anything be more exciting? It was like an adventure story coming true, as she learned what she might do and what she might not in that land of Redcoats and horses and Red Indians ; and it was necessary for her to fit into the life quickly if she was to be allowed to stay. Stay she did, however, and won the right to be called 'Susannah of the Mounties'.
