Dakota: The story of a Mother's quest for her lost five-year-old child, alone and afraid in hostile Indian terroritory.

Anthony John George Liston
0/5 ( ratings)
Dakota is set in the American West, during the turbulent late 19th Century and is the heartfelt and gripping story of a Mother’s desperate attempt, following the cold-blooded murder of her parents, to find her
missing five-year-old son.

Aakashi Chopra, a sophisticated visitor from the British Colony of India, hires Jeremiah Cody, a disillusioned ex-army scout, to help her find her child. Although basically a decent man, he is haunted and tormented by the loss of his Arapaho wife and son at the hands of Chivington’s Volunteers at Sand Creek. At times, in a fruitless attempt to rid himself of his demons, he unwillingly succumbs to the lure of alcohol with devastating consequences.

This unlikely and bitter-sweet pairing, between a privately educated lady and a salty, uncompromising frontiersman is both humourous,
and, at times, deeply touching.

Major issues, such as deep-rooted racism; religious intolerance; family disharmony; and man’s inhumanity to man is shockingly explored
in this intriguing and thought-provoking story.

Their tale of unrequited love, family treachery, ethnic discrimination, and their survival against insufferable odds is told against the degrading demise of the Plains Indians, the final chapter coming to its inglorious end at the Wounded Knee massacre on December 29th 1890.
