The Tao of Flying

The Tao of Flying

Richard Hassler
0/5 ( ratings)
Pilots often struggle to describe their true feelings about the flying they do. For most pilots, flying goes WAY beyond simply manipulating controls. There is a certain spirituality involved--a connection to something beyond explanation, knowledge, and skill. It is an aspect of existence that enjoys total harmony--everything in agreement. Be it a vintage taildragger, a high-performance twin, a turbine helicopter, or the simplest sailplane, the experience is the same. Pilots become one with their machines, one with themselves, and one with nature.

Taoism is an ancient Chinese philosophy that addresses life, humanity, and nature. When translated, “The Tao” simply means “The Way.” It stresses universal harmony thereby allowing us to understand things about life and nature that would otherwise be a mystery.

These stories are not an attempt to define the Tao. That is impossible. These stories endeavor to connect the simple spirit we feel as pilots with the equally simple spirit of the Way, thus their brevity.
