Brazil, a flawed democracy: A history of corruption

Brazil, a flawed democracy: A history of corruption

Gilberto de Abreu Sodré Carvalho
0/5 ( ratings)
This book will help the reader, regardless of his or her previous knowledge, to understand Brazil and other flawed and hierarchical democracies in the world.
A highly-advanced Portugal achieved marvels and magnificence from the end of the 14th to the 16th century. However, as time went by the Portuguese showed an extraordinary inability to cope with challenges from competitors. In fact all their accomplishments fell into a museum-like archaism of habits.
Brazil followed suit as the wonderful child of Portugal. It became independent in 1822, already cursed with an old-fashioned political elite. In the 21st century it is still archaic as it presents a flawed citizenship model and a precarious education system that supports the long living domination and corruption by incumbent politicians and their private associates.
All Brazil’s enormous natural resources and agricultural production of today indicate no certainty of any future of the country as a prosperous nation in the world. Brazil is largely dependent on the growth of the others, because it lacks competitive quality education, significant innovation, competitive industry, and good infrastructure. At the same time, the social differences found are truly astonishing.
Full democracy in Brazil would lead to some dismantling of Brazil’s long-living corruption model. This model is threefold. It presents three kinds of actions, which are from the most immoral and lucrative to the less so. They are intentional choice of work, services and expenditures that ease and increase the distribution of gains among politicians, officials and their private partners; regardless of its comparative importance among other much more urgent and legitimate choices; making urgent work, services and expenditures with the illicit purpose of serial ‘reworks’ and additional and invisible gains for corruption associates; and commissions paid to politicians and officials by their private associates.
