A cataclysmic cosmic event has laid waste to the Earth. In the fractured reality left behind Christian Gravesong, investigator of paradoxes, finds himself bestowed with a bizarre gift. It's this gift that brings Louisa Sekhmet-Dark, exquisitely stylish arch-necromancer, to his dilapidated door one Friday night in the city of Sarum's Ford.
Sekhmet-Dark thinks she has a problem, but in fact she has several. Zachary Kane, who would call himself a scientist if such things still existed, has seemingly disappeared into thin air from an otherwise impenetrable vault beneath the precinct of the Guild of Necromancers. The beautiful witch fears forces are acting against Kane. She's right.
The Subjugator Vassago has been dispatched, with the Spider-Legions of the Ascendancy, to find Kane. Gravesong is perplexed, he's never even heard rumors of the titanic bathyspheres that suddenly surface in the River Lethe, there's been no talk of them from anyone on this side of the Turquoise mountains. But Vassago is insistent, in his condescending steampunk-fascist way, deliver Kane to the Ascendancy or the Spider Legions with decimate and devour Sarum's Ford. Sekhmet-Dark, the Guild of Necromancers, and the renegade witch Leila Vandersol have other ideas.
The ensuing battle is only the opening gambit in a war between radically opposed ideologies. In the middle of it is Christian Gravesong, a patient man, who finds himself charged with a deadly task by forces almost beyond imagination. Gravesong must find Kane in order to stop the cosmic machinations of the Ascendancy as directed by the Architect, Janus. In doing so he must also come to terms with his past and his loss, and try to understand why the fracturing of reality that occurred seven years ago from his perspective has affected him so badly.
With the witches Sekhmet-Dark and Vandersol, Gravesong embarks on an epic journey through the alter-Earths, dystopian worlds where failed histories have inveigled their way into existence. As they travel the truly despotic nature of the Ascendancy is revealed to him, as is the awful and horrific origins of the Spider-Legions.
It isn't only the physical depravities of the Ascendancy that sicken Gravesong though. Janus's meddling has incurred the wrath of the symbols, entities as old as the universe itself. The doctrine of two forces and one-law, the law which must never be broken, may cause them to bring down a final judgement upon the human race, a sanction so terrible that it would see humanity not merely destroyed, but totally erased from the fabric of history.
Together, Gravesong and the capricious witches must find the violators and bring them to justice before the symbols pass judgement. In doing so though, Gravesong will discover the true nature of his own past and the awful tragedy that brought him to his current painful existence. Before that can happen he must face the trials of the Eternitarium and do battle on the worlds of the Ascendancy.
The Odyssey of Christian Gravesong is an epic fantasy saga, a journey through a universe where steampunk technology and mage magic battle head-to-head, and where for a good man to triumph over evil he must make awful sacrifices, terrible choices, and lose some vital part of himself to the fight.
