POSTURE AND GESTURE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PHYSICAL BEHAVIOUR

POSTURE AND GESTURE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PHYSICAL BEHAVIOUR

Dick Mccaw
0/5 ( ratings)
Originally written in 1965 but now out of print, this book sets out Warren Lamb’s theory, developed from his studies and work with Rudolf Laban, on the link between human movement patterning and the individual preference in decision-making.
Laban had already developed theories on the components of movement, Shape Effort and Flow, and had used his understanding of these not only for choreography, but also for increasing the efficiency of workers in essential British industries during the Second World War. Lamb met and studied with Laban after his return from war service, and Laban immediately recognised his particular talent for understanding his effort theory.
From what Laban had started, Lamb went onto develop a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between individual movement and cognitive processes. Two people could do the same job, but they would do it in different ways, and how they would perform at this and other tasks could be not only observed but also notated and even predicted.
In the early days this process of analysis was called Aptitude Assessment. It is now known and practiced widely under the title of Movement Pattern Analysis. In Posture and Gesture Lamb set out for the first time his development of Laban’s theories.
